Recognizing the Contributions of Dr. Walter Unger

David Giesbrecht and Anne Andres

Dr. Walter Unger began to share his talent for writing during the 1960s while he was teaching in the Ontario public school system. His subsequent studies and involvement in a variety of local church and conference boards and, most notably, his leadership at Columbia Bible College for the past thirty years have sharpened his skills as a clear thinking, analytical writer. They have also enabled him to contribute towards a meaningful conversation about the meaning of contemporary Anabaptist Christianity.

Throughout his writings Dr. Unger has exhibited a deep concern for a spirituality that has integrity, particularly recognizing the need for sustaining, ongoing personal renewal.

Dr. Unger’s bibliography, which now includes 220 entries, reflects an enviable productivity. Often he has provided definitive statements on particular matters of doctrine or practice. Over the years his articles have appeared in fourteen magazines and journals. Many readers will remember him as a regular contributor to the “Christian Mind,” a column that was featured in the Mennonite Brethren Herald between 1981 and 1996.

The following indicates Walter’s journalistic productivity during the past forty years, showing the number of articles published during each decade.

In addition to periodical publications, Dr. Unger has contributed three encyclopedic entries for Mennonite reference sources, as well as individual chapters in two books and numerous literary reviews. During this time he has read twelve papers at various meetings and conventions.

Dr. Unger’s thinking has touched on a significant diversity of themes among which several emphases stand out. Inspired by his two dissertations which focused on the emergence of American Fundamentalism and the social views of Charles Grandison Finney, he has significantly drawn on historical theology, often gathering inspiration from prominent Christian leaders. His life-long interest in C. S. Lewis led him to attend two C. S. Lewis conferences at Oxford University. It is no surprise that his bibliography includes some ten entries on C. S. Lewis alone.

Throughout his writings Dr. Unger has exhibited a deep concern for a spirituality that has integrity, particularly recognizing the need for sustaining, ongoing personal renewal. Some of his most forceful reflections have related to trends and issues facing the contemporary church. On numerous occasions, his articles addressed false expressions of religiosity, complex leadership shifts, and the tension between sports and religion. Many readers have benefited from his analysis of social and moral issues as they intersect with a Christian worldview. He has often observed that healthy ethics flow from a responsible reading of the Bible.

Dr. Unger’s writing style has largely been aimed at a broad readership. The popular appeal, however, has not been at the cost of intellectual compromise. It is evident from his writing that he reads extensively. Many of his articles are research-based and interact with significant books that have caught special attention. As letters in the Mennonite Brethren Herald have attested on many occasions, his contributions have been widely appreciated. To borrow a phrase from J. H. Yoder in The Priestly Kingdom, Dr. Walter Unger must be credited as a vital “agent of memory” for North American Mennonites.
